But dont worry, I have much more planned for this laser! TikTok - www.tiktok.com/@thebackyardscientist Twitter - twitter.com/ChemicalKevy Instagram - instagram.com/backyardscientistlofficial/ secret discord discord.gg/DqPbGgq There were never any planes in danger and I can prove it with science. First of all, we never turned the beam on more than 4 amps (50 watts)because we were having cooling issues and couldn't really monitor it up on the car.. (we tried 6 amps once but it was too bright.) So assuming the beam stayed perfectly collimated, the beam would have an area of 430 square centimeters. If the laser was running at 25% power (4 amps/50 watts) that would be about 110mw/cm2 from the telescope. However, your pupil is only half this size fully open, so a pilot could theoretically receive a 50mw/cm2 exposure. A decent amount, but you have to remember even the smallest plane is traveling 150 miles per hour which would limit total exposure time to only 3ms( time it takes to cross a 9 inch beam). That puts it at the cusp of the maximum exposure limit, which is defined as "about 10% of the dose that has a 50% chance of creating damage under worst-case conditions." Here is the chart im referencing en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_safety#/media/File:IEC60825_MPE_W_s.png So even under perfect conditions, this would still be 10x less than the exposure that carries a risk of damage. That's assuming perfect conditions, but in reality it was a hazy night, the laser would not be perfectly collimated, the atmosphere would distort the beam, the windows in the airplane would deflect some of the beam, unless the pilot was staring directly at the beam they would receive a smaller dose, I tried to keep the beam moving when up in the sky, and most planes are moving faster. all of this meaning the pilot would be exposed to a much lower amount of laser energy in the real world than under perfect conditions. even at full power this laser is still within the safety factor of the maximum exposure limit. Plus do you know the odds of hitting a plane with a laser when your trying not to? just pick a random star in the sky and wait for a plane to fly over it.

Finally I incinerated the battery with a 30W infrared laser in a fishtank filled with 100% pure oxygen.

Giaco Whatever video: noburn.info/id/video/qKbXc8deaaiJrWU.html A few more thoughts on the Nerf Cannon. Yes, I know if I used a longer barrel I could get higher speeds, but I did not want to deal with a 20ft long gun. I think a 6ft barrel was enough to show what a supersonic nerf dart can do. Davekni got a pingpong ball going 2000mph which is 2930 ft/s!! (mach 2.5). His barrel was 20ft long. It can shoot through 3/4in plywood! You can see that video here- noburn.info/id/video/m6zYqNlll6KGmYI.html I always thought the speed of sound was the limiting factor, because the flow 'chokes' at mach 1. Its a big controversy among air-gunners, and theres like a 900 post topic on it here www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=102604.540. Some guy got one going like 2100 ft/s which I thought was impossible. noburn.info/id/video/14nUZbOCoZJqmag.html So it prompted me to do some research. It turns out flow does choke at mach 1, but its only the mass flow that chokes. The gas can still expand supersonically. If you have never heard of it -Thermite is a mixture of Iron Oxide (rust) and Aluminum powder. When you ignite it a vigorous chemical reaction takes place which results in liquid iron. Its used industrially for welding metal, the military uses it to destroy enemy equipment, teachers use it for science demonstrations, and youtubers just melt stuff with it. Ok thats it, Fidget Spinner trend is over, cause this is the best one ever!! ;) I built a custom fidget spinner out of 1/4in aluminum plate and strapped 3 E sized rocket engines. Really, I just wanted to do this. I saw Stephens video and needed answers. Plus, this gave me an excuse to buy a Plasma Cutter ive been eyeballing for yearssss. (dont tell sandra I could have made this with a jigsaw..) The spinner has a 6 inch radius, so it travels ~37 inches to make a full circle. Its spinning 88 times per second (5200 per minute), so that means the tip is traveling 276 feet per second, or 188.182 MPH. so yeah, 1000mph fidget spinner is pretty much impossible... Turn an old Oven into a Kiln
Turn an old Oven into a Kiln
3 år siden
Hey everybody, ive been busy the past two weeks! I had a great time at Playlist Live, and finished some much needed organization in my garage. I finally got around to building a large kiln to help me make investment molds for aluminum casting. Now I can finally get this laser gun built! Keep reading, more below! Shoutout to Keystone Science! noburn.info I couldn't find any info on any projects like this, so I thought I would have a try myself. I thought an oven would be the perfect platform, it already has a door, space for insulation, and comes with heating elements! Im not giving the oven any more power that it would normally use in Self Cleaning Mode. Im just increasing the efficiency by adding high quality insulating materials and eliminating ways for heat to escape. The oven was almost exactly $270 to build, which is about $200 cheaper than a used kiln on craigslist. and 1/10 the cost of a new kiln. Giant Mouse Trap [Smashes Everything]

Ive got a bit of a Raccoon problem at my house… I built something to fix the problem. It breaks multiple local ordinances and a few international treaties, but I give you THE GIANT MOUSETRAP! It took over 3 weeks to build and cost around $360 to build, with the main expenses being the winch, and the multiple pipe fittings to adapt the springs to the bar. Marks Video: noburn.info/id/video/3ILHpJeBeXqppYI.html Facebook: facebook.com/TheBackyardScientistOfficial Instagram: instagram.com/backyardscientistofficial/ Twitter: @ChemicalKevy twitter.com/ChemicalKevy Website: thebackyardscient.ist/ Every time I wound it up, something broke. Originally i built it to use garage door springs, but they were not strong enough. Once I switched to coil springs stuff started breaking. First it was the bar, which bent, and needed corner enforcement's welded on. Then the 'axel' running down the center of the springs bent, so I needed to add hardware to counteract the winch pulling on it. Next, the springs themselves broke. I learned something about trying to weld tempered steel.. It just creates stresses and the weld was much more brittle (harder) than the spring steel. I had to re-weld it and heat up the spring up to about 3 inches from the weld, this created a more gradual slope of hardness, so the spring bent where i welded instead of snapping. Then the bar bent in the middle, so I had to weld a 4' long 1" corner to it. Finally, the arms of the bar are flexing when I tighten the springs too much, but I think this is okay, for now!

Blacksmith Myth - Will a drop of Water on the Anvil make it explode?
Blacksmith Myth - Will a drop of Water on the Anvil make it explode?

I read a myth (below) that said striking a drop of water with a hot iron and hammer will send the hammer flying. luckily I just met a local Blacksmith! Trez is a great guy, he has a small channel, but mainly focuses on working as a blacksmith. He makes all his own hammers and tools, and could make you something too! [email protected] noburn.info "When you spit on a piece of red hot iron, it dances around in a little ball. If you hit the ball with your hammer, the explosion will throw the hammer over the barn and blow a hole in the iron!" Source - ufdcimages.uflib.ufl.edu/AA/00/00/03/83/00060/AA00000383_00060_194.pdf (Page 205, middle on the right) Why do blacksmiths ring their anvils? WELL THEN, Once upon a time long long ago and far far away; on an island where the grass is emerald green, A VILLAGE SMITH was shoeing a horse at his open air shop. His large anvil rang with each blow to the shoes. Standing quietly in the shade of the spreading chestnut tree, the horse waited patiently. THE DEVIL, passing by, heard the ringing of the anvil and decided to see what was going on. He stood watching as the blacksmith made a wonderful set of new shoes for the horse. THE SMITH then proceeded to trim the horse's hooves and nail the shoes in place. The horse stood quietly as this was done, and when the smith finished, the owner of the horse mounted his steed and took him for a trot down the road. THE HORSE was noticeably happy with his new shoes, for he danced and he pranced all the way to the corner and back. SEEING THIS, the Devil being a hoofed creature himself, decided that he must have a set of these wonderful shoes. He approached the smith and told him to prepare a set of shoes for him. THE SMITH (realizing that this was the Devil himself), made a set of shoes too small, trimmed the hooves too short and drove several close nails in each of the devils hooves. He also clinched them quite heavily so they would not come off easily. The Devil in terrible pain, lame and very sore footed went running away and suffered for many days. SO to this very day when ever the Devil hears an anvil ringing he makes it a point to stay as far away as possible. THIS is also why hanging a horseshoe over the door keeps the Devil away! The high voltage transformer is more dangerous! I don't think the color has anything to do with what goes off first like some people thought, they all blow up too quickly for that to come into play.

Kevin: 1 - Alex: 0 Some notes about the gun: There are commercial liquid nitrogen guns used by dermatologists to freeze warts and skin cancer off. The guy that sells me liquid nitrogen was telling me about them. he says they have a pressure release valve that keeps the pressure at around 70psi. The problem is its hard to make a thermos thats also pressure rated because you have a pressure on the inside of the flask, then a vacuum directly on the other side. They are fragile and expensive. I tried to put a nichrome heating element inside the thermos to increase pressure, but it ended up not working that great. shaking the thermos made way more pressure!

Visit Aimed-Research.com for a chance to win a Amazon Fire tablet! Take a poll to help me choose what Backyard Scientist gear to sell! goo.gl/forms/9BAvA7wUAb Thanks to my friend Travis for being awesome and letting me use his property to film. Honestly this dude is awesome, ever time I go over there the lawn just gets destroyed, things catch fire that aren't supposed to, and hes just a generally cool guy, thanks Travis! This is part 2 from my liquid metal bullets experiment! Last week we tested how these bullets preform by shooting them into a tank of water, this week we got to have some fun! We shot watermelons, cinderblocks, starting fluid, and a bunch more. Its a long video, but totally worth staying till the end because you get to see me choke on a bug haha. The first test was shooting bullets at a watermelon. We shot Sodium, Potassium, and a special alloy of sodium & potassium thats a liquid! Its basically the closest thing to shooting mercury out of a gun! These bullets are insane! For this video I bought 150g of potassium for $325 , and 500g of sodium for $150. Each bullet holds 1g of metal. I also had to buy regular .45 hollowpoint ammo to modify ~.50c/bullet. At these prices, each potassium bullet costs $2.50 Each sodium bullet cost .80c. The liquid alloy is 25% sodium, 75% potassium. These bullets must be stored under dried and degassed solvent, blanketed in a dry, and inert atmosphere. Storing the bullets in regular oil or other hydrocarbon solvent will quickly destroy the entire bullet and casing in less than a week. Common oils and solvents are slightly permeable to oxygen and moisture which will react with the alkali metals to form corrosive hydroxides which will etch the zinc in the brass casing. Oil will enter the casing and inactivate the smokeless powder. After 1 week 1/10 of the bullets stored under oil did not fire. Song - opus1.sourceaudio.com/#!details?id=13619411
LIQUID METAL BULLETS in Slow Motion!
LIQUID METAL BULLETS in Slow Motion!

In this video I shoot the worlds first liquid metal bullets made from sodium and potassium. I recorded the whole thing on a high speed phantom camera borrowed from Aimed-Research.com. I melted the soft lead from .45 caliber hollow point bullets and replaced it with super soft sodium and potassium metal. When you combine sodium and potassium they form a liquid metal! I tested these bullets in a acrylic test chamber filled with water, and recorded the results on a high speed camera. I chose .45 bullets because they could hold the most metal. Once I melt out the lead, the empty copper jackets can hold around 1 cubic centimeter of material. Lead has a density of around 11g/cm3, and sodium & potassium have a density of only ~1g/cm3. They bullets are much lighter, so they don't have as much kinetic energy. Even though they carry less energy, they expand way faster because of the soft metals. The energy is transferred instantly! A lead bullet takes around 2 feet to stop in water, but these bullets stop in 6 inches! This was my most expensive video ever, I spent $1300 on sodium, potassium, and a gun! My friend Joe and Coyt invited me to come hangout and watch the cub scouts launch a high altitude balloon for their engineering pin. Greg, one of the pack leaders, designed a GPS receiver that transmits data over amateur radio frequencies. Amature radio frequencies have a very long range, so our signal was able to be picked up by any station within line-of-sight, even at 100,000 feet! Notes From Greg - Posted from comments for more visibility. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Greg Spiegel---- I have been asked for some specifics on the balloon and it's payload. The APRS tracker was from Byonics ( MT-1000 HAB Combo) The Wildlife tracker was from American Wildlife Enterprises www.americanwildlifeenterprises.com/ The balloon was from Kaymont Balloons (1000g) kaymontballoons.com/ The batteries used in the transmitter were energizer lithiums. Dry Ice Hoverboard (D.I.Y. REAL Hoverboard)
Dry Ice Hoverboard (D.I.Y. REAL Hoverboard)
4 år siden
Today I make a REAL hoverboard out of dry ice! It doesn't lift you high into the air like back to the future, but it perfectly emulates the feeling! Its just a wooden board with a rim around the edge to hole 3 blocks of dry-ice in place. As the dry ice sublimates, the pressure from the expanding gas is enough greatly reduce surface friction and you can glide on any smooth surface. The wood floor in this video was far from perfect, but it did the job pretty well! I would consider this a real hoverboard because the dry ice is not in contact with the surface. There is actually a very thin layer of gas between the two surfaces. The problem is any irregularities in the floor surface will contact the dry ice, slowing the board down. If this was on a glass surface, I think air friction would slow you down before the surface friction! The board can last for an hour before the ice gets too thin. I spent $100 total on dry ice testing, and making this video. each block costs around $15. It works just as well with 2 blocks also! Im guessing there are over 10,000 in there! Anyway, I melted a bunch of old aluminum pipes and poured them into the fishtank hoping to create a cool design. And it worked perfectly! These are really unique, no two pieces are alike. Vat 19 was nice enough to supply me with the spitballs to use in this video :) www.vat19.com/item/spitballs-50-g-pack They are also posting a version of this on their youtube channel, which I will link to soon when its posted. facebook.com/TheBackyardScientistOfficial Today I put the Leidenfrost effect to the test! Im trying out a great question from somebody on my facebook page. He wanted to know if a hot object will fall faster than a cold object through water. I set up my fishtank and dropped red-hot steel balls through water to see if they fall faster. This would be a great science fair project if you don't burn down your house.

In this video I team up the The Proper People to make blow huge fireballs and spin steel wool in an abandoned mine! You can watch their video here - noburn.info/id/video/0YbQnNpkYIuMipQ.html All you need to make these fireballs is cornstarch. Just grab a hand full and blow it onto a flame. This is probably the safest way to blow fire...Just remember to blow hard enough to keep the fireball away from your face! I souped up this experiment by loading a whole box of cornstarch into a air cannon. I pumped it up to 60psi and triggered the valve which sends air exploding through the bottom of the pile or the cornstarch turning it into a huge dust cloud. A torch at the base of the dust cloud ignites it once it reaches the correct fuel/air ratio. You can use flour, sawdust, or coffee creamer also for this experiment, It would probably taste better also! I read all my comments, but sometimes I miss a few! Pouring molten Aluminum into a Pumpkin (cooled with liquid nitrogen!!!)
Pouring molten Aluminum into a Pumpkin (cooled with liquid nitrogen!!!)

The inside of a pumpkin has a pretty interesting geometry. I had the idea to cast the inside to see what it looks like, but the inside of the pumpkin is very fragile and the 1000 degree aluminum pretty much destroys it as soon as it comes in contact with the soft flesh. I thought freezing the pumpkin would provide more structural support, so I froze the pumpkin from the inside out with liquid nitrogen. My thermometer can only measure to -36f (-38c), and the pumpkin was colder than that. Liquid nitrogen has a boiling point of like -300 degrees. Which means it sucks heat from whatever it touches until that object is -300 degrees at which point it stops boiling. Next time I cast any fruits i will defiantly be freezing them first!

You have probably heard of steel wool before. You can burn it and swing it around to create amazing sparks and effects. I thought it would be fun to attach steel wool to a drone and fly it around a beach at night. It turned our really cool. I also attached sparklers to the drone and flew it around. Sparklers last way longer than steel wool, and im sure everybody on the beach was impressed as It flew down the shore.

What happens when you fill a ping pong ball with extremely flammable propane, then light it on fire? Does it spin really fast, or make a cool noise, or explode? The answer is yes! Last video, I made a mistake. I forgot to set one of these on fire! Well thats kinda my thing, so today I set out to fill a pingpong ball with propane and set it on fire. I used a hose with a 20ga needle on the end to pump propane directly into the ping pong ball. I put a torch on my wooden bench and threw gas filled ping pong balls at it. What could go wrong? Fun Fact - Ping pong balls are very flammable by themselves. They are around 20% nitrocellulose AKA Guncotton! Thanks to those who risk their lives helping me film my videos ;)

I was on Reddit yesterday, and I saw a cool GIF on r/woahdude. It looked so cool I had to do it. Also people were debating on how fast the ball was really spinning, and I had to find out for myself so I grabbed my camera that can shoot up to 1000fps. The original poster estimated the speed at 10,000 rpm, but the ball was really spinning 30,000 rpm in my experiments!

Link to KickStarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/3dsimo-mini/3dsimo-mini-make-your-vision-come-true Ive always wanted to play with a 3D pen, they look pretty fun. Ive figured out some practical uses, like turning plastic into metal, and 'welding' broken plastic together. Its easy to turn any 3D drawn or 3D printed plastic object into metal. You just need to encase it in plaster, and drill some holes through the plaster to the object. Thats so you can melt out the plastic, leaving a hollow mold you can fill with metal. Fixing plastic objects is pretty straight forward, you just need to use the same type of plastic to fix it with. I also pranked my girlfriend with a 3D drawn plastic spider, she got scared and started to punch me haha, but I gave her a rose made out of color changing plastic and everything was ok :) Dry Ice Air-Hockey is pretty fun, but you need a really clean and flat surface! Im thinking about scaling this up, and making a dry ice skateboard.

I thought it would be fun to film propane balloons exploding in slow motion, and I tried popping them a bunch of different ways. I took some user suggestions like flying a drone with a sparkler attached into a balloon, and filling a balloon with a explosive mixture of propane and oxygen and detonating it underwater. I also thew spears at the balloons and hit them with steel wool. I did not directly handle any of the balloons filled with gas, instead I safely filled them from the propane tank with a 10' hose. the hose had a valve that kept the propane in the balloon after I disconnected it from the tank. The first time I filled a balloon I had no idea how big the fireball would be. I lit the underside of a balloon with a grill lighter. The radius of the fireball was 3 feet, and it consumed my arm up to my elbow. I got 2nd degree burns on the top all my fingers, and my arm that took two weeks to heal. My point is these balloons contain a deceptively large amount of propane, be careful. Facts about this video: 828 liters of propane 95 degree heat 72 balloons 18 people suggesting underwater balloon explosions 10.3 pounds of CO2 released into the atmosphere 4 drone propellers 3 days of filming 1 2nd degree burn

Welcome back to Slow Motion Saturday! This week is about electricity and plasma. So out first suggestion come from user xZxDerpDragonxZx.. He wants me to DO SOMETHING WITH PLASMA. well thats a pretty general suggestion but i know just the thing *slam microwave transformer* Its a microwave oven transformer. You've seen me use this in my other videos like woodturning with electricity, or cooking an egg with high voltage. Plasma, like solid liquid and gas is considered a state of matter. Plasma is ionized gas, and can be created by applying energy to a gas, like electromagnetic or electrical energy like this transformer. As you can see it puts out an extremely powerful arc of electricity, But its hiding a cool secret we cant see with our own eyes. At 10x slow motion we begin to see a flickering light, this is caused by the AC or alternating current that comes out electrical outlets. the alternating current reverses direction 60 times per second, which causes the flicker. The blue light in the center is the electrical arc, its so hot its turning the surrounding air into plasma The next suggestions comes from viewer lanceipod7 he asks if I can throw a grape in the microwave, and I would be happy to, because I've actually never done this before. All I needed to do was cut the top off a grape, and split it down the middle, but carefully leaving the two halves connected. I read all my comments, but sometimes I miss a few! Pouring Molten Metals into Water. COOL! (Aluminum, Thermite, Lead + More!)
5 år siden
Ive been pouring 7 different metals into a 24" tall aquarium over the weekend, and the results have been super cool! I poured metals with different melting points to see if they had any different effects when they came in contact with water. From Pewter (350f/170c) all the way to Thermite (4000f/2204c). Some of them exploded, some of them sank and made molten metal drippy-castles, but they were all interesting. Here is a list of metals I used, and their melting points: Pewter 338-446 °F - 170-230 °C Tin - 449.5°F (231.9°C) Bismuth - 520.6°F (271.4°C) Lead - 621.5°F (327.5°C) Zinc - 787.2°F (419.5°C) Aluminum - 1,221°F (660.3°C) Iron - 2,800°F (1,538°C) 4000f (2200 C) Reaction I don't have anything against the usage of celsius, or aluminiuminum. Im not calling you communists either, im just messing with you guys because you always yell about my pronunciation ;) (but seriously its aluminum in America!) I poured in the metals as soon as they were fully liquid, so they could not raise too far above the melting point and skew the results. This video is a great demonstration of the leidenfrost effect. I will be uploading all the uncut footage in slow motion, as well as behind-the-scenes for you guys soon, I will post it on social media and in the video description. I could not include the whole stuff in the video, because 10 seconds at 240fps is 100 seconds long played back. It would get boring, but It is certainly worth a watch. I read all my comments, but sometimes I miss a few! If you need help with a project you are welcome to email me :) On my Facebook, G+, and Twitter page I post questions, polls, and sneak peeks into my next video. Im always looking for my fans input! Molten Aluminum Vs. Lava Lamp
Molten Aluminum Vs. Lava Lamp
5 år siden
Ever wonder what would happen If you poured molten aluminum into a lava lamp? Me neither. Well, you voted, I listened! Some of my viewers on my Facebook, and G+ pages suggested that I pour molten aluminum into a Lava Lamp. That sounded awesome so I set out to buy the biggest one them make..27"! After I got it, I was sad it was going to break because I really liked it. I hope this video gets enough views so I can buy another one! I melted down about a pound or two of aluminum and poured it into a lava lamp. I had 4 cameras to capture the carnage, but only two turned out worthwhile. Aluminum melts at 1,221°F (660.3°C), so this stuff was HOT. I knew it would go down to the bottom and crack the glass, but I was not expecting the aluminum to cool in a neat shape. Moral of the story, pour molten metal in things. I read all my comments, but sometimes I miss a few! If you need help with a project you are welcome to email me :) On my Facebook, G+, and Twitter page I post questions, polls, and sneak peeks into my next video. Im always looking for my fans input! I'm sure you're aware that magnesium burns at 5600 degrees fahrenheit and will melt a propane torch very quickly if one tries to move the fire as you did at 0:40. If that torch had deformed a slight bit, it could cause an immediate explosion. Also, considering the difficulty of putting out such a fire, I certainly hope that you notified the local fire department before you decided to start a magnesium fire in your back yard. This is extremely unsafe and irresponsible to put on the internet.

You can't tell what aircraft are in the sky in any direction. "Flight radar" web sites show the location of flights that have data that is accessible, which might include ADS-B broadcast from airliners and the output of secondary radar from airports which depend on transponders on the plane. But a plane too small to have a radar transponder may not show up at all. (Civilian airports seldom have primary radar, which sees aircraft by their radar reflection only).

This would actually be a really good weapon against aliens or nuclear missiles if could have an electronic tracking system that is able to track small targets accelerating or moving near the speed of light, also if it could track multiple targets, targeting their weak points and destroy one then move to the next target fast and accurately. Some expensive telescopes have really good tracking and location abilities.
