1:18:34 I’d just like to add the definition I go with when talking about the differences between consuming books and any other form of material. Books are the result of a person digesting all of that information for you. So a book is basically this lifetime of the experiences of a person, shaping years of knowledge and study of various areas of a matter/subject. So when you read a book you’re consuming this new thing that before was a bunch of things that this other person consumed. It’s rich. A documentary (and other types of study material) gathers the information and presents it to you, so you have to consume it and you have to decide what to do with that, and it seems much more open and vague. I can elaborate on this for hours, but I’ll stop here. Just a piece of my opinion.

This is a great interview. I 100% agree with decreasing friction between habits you want to adopt and increasing it between bad habits. That strategy helped me start flossing every day, meditating for over 1,100 days in a row, eliminating my phone and TV habit, and teaching myself how to DJ. It’s such a simple strategy but works for everything.

This video had so many good points, but the fallacies mentioned really distracted me! For example, flossing your teeth every day is way more important than writing every day! Poor dental health can lead to a much shorter life! Also, conscientiousness does not mean that you are more orderly. It means that you are more sensitive to what’s going on around you, including other people’s feelings and responses.

I remember watching this when it came out, it had a lot of great info but it felt like just another episode. Here I am 2 years later, quarantined in nyc for three months and extremely depressed, listening to it again because someone on reddit told me to. funny how with self help stuff, it's more about when you hear it than if you hear it. cheers ✌️

It's interesting watching this after having read the book. He often reiterates the book nearly word-for-word, which goes to show how concrete his thoughts around these subjects are.

I always hated to stand in front of mirror and do flossing or brush teeth. And this had such easy solution. I started to do it in front of favorite shows and the effect was insane. Since then I never skipped a single day and the time spend doing it tripled... I think I even enjoy it, I just couldn't go sleep without doing it. Later I even switched the shows for self developing videos like this one, and here comes my new habbit for which I have no reason to feel bad. I wish all areas had such an easy solution.

I chuckled at how relatable his first line was. I also have spent a lot of time reading books and researching psychology topics, and recently been combining info in word docs by topic. Though I don’t plan to write a book haha >.

If we program ourselves with daily rituals that better our personal development even if its just little things we are well on our way to happiness. The aim in whatever we do should be HAPPY. If your about to do something you have to ask will it make me happy if the answer is no then dont do it. Oh fuck my health aint good will it make me happy if i try to eat better exercise meditate whatever to help make my health better yes well do it. Once we can accomplish good small habits/ rituals we then can set bigger ones. I think we all try take big leaps to quick and then fail and then thats it give up its to hard.

Mastery is about learning to love the journey not looking forward to the finish line. There is no clear finish line in mastery, if you feel like you've achieved mastery you haven't understood the concept of mastery. Habits are the tools of obtaining mastery but how you see the world is where it all starts.

“Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.” - Stephen R. Covey.
