Hope you're all staying safe and healthy. We've got some great content lined up for you and we're trying our hardest to keep you inspired and entertained. We hope it's just boredom you're fighting and not illness and suffering. We're thinking deeply about those affected by Covid19 and are grateful for all the healthcare workers around the world putting their lives on the line.
If your shop is at home or it's just you, I hope you're able to make some great things. If you're allowed to be responsibly outside, as we are fortunate to be here in Montana, I hope you enjoy some nature too. If you or loved ones are struggling with health, we have you in our thoughts.
This video began filming about two weeks ago so it's a little out of date in terms of the precautions and protocol we now have at the workshop in regards to avoiding the spread of the virus.
What do you think about a live show at some point this week or next to lighten the mood and have a blast from the past of the Barker Street Forge days?

I don't want to sound like a smartass Alec, since I have absolutely no knowledge about forging and blacksmith business. I love your channel and I am following you since the beginning.
But wouldn't it be better, in current times, to infest in a induction forge? That requires no gas at all.
Here in the Netherlands ( a gas drilling country), we are slowly converting into gas free country.
Besides this, Induction is silent, fast, and reliable. And you can infest in solar-panels to help reduce the energie bills.. In the long run, I think you will profit form it.

the two bends that you have in the blower pipe, must be also causing some loss in pressure if you could somehow make a mount that enables the pipe to feed straight and directly into the forge, the original blower might even be enough... good luck with the project!

I have the solution to your problem but cannot find a way to contact you : anyway you want to gradually reduce the pipe size coming from your blower. I go from a 4 inch blower output to a 1 inch at the burner flare over the course of about 5 ft of heater hoses gradually necking til it meets at a 2 in to 1 in black iron reducer then has about 3 ft of 1in black pipe elbowing about til it goes to flare inside forge. The gradual reduction in size simply increases the pressure at which air is supplied and yes it does strain the bouncy house blower.... But that is what they were designed for. And infact one runs smoother with that bit of backpressure

You mentioned a possible blockage. Obviously look there first. Natural gas is a mix of several gasses, including propane. Much more importantly, you get the same heat from 1 cu ft propane as in 2.5 cu ft of natural gas. So your flow of natural gas must be much higher to get the same performance. Your flow of air must increase roughly in proportion. My bet is that the forge was designed to use propane. I suspect that to use natural gas, not only do you need your nice new blower, but you need much larger burners so that you are combusting the gas and trapping the heat instead of just blowing it out of the forge, and high enough gas pressure to deliver the volume.

Alec, you probably need to enlarge pipe between the fan outlet and the forge. Also, a swept tee instead of the square tee on the gas connection to the main pipe may help too

I'm wondering if its possible to put in a venturi tube just before the burner box? By nature it will condense the air/gas flow and force it out the other side at a higher rate of speed and pressure. It could be worth a try. You have a mill that could handle making a venturi tube.

Does that gas/air inlet pipe allow the air to flow in at a high enough rate? I'm thinking you might just be bottlenecked with that smaller pipe and need to go bigger.

You could aquire an squirl cage(blower motor) from a furnace they put out alot of air. if you manage to find a large furnace from a 2 story home they usually have bigger motors and usually you can find them free on craigslist or at a scrap yard

Air going into blower should be cold if possible, atmospheric pressure can't be changed but at a given pressure the density would depend on temperature. I bet that shop gets sweltering when the forge is on.
Going from a 30c(86F) to a 10c(50F) outside air would give you a more than 7 percent improvement in the amount of oxygen and Montana is pretty cold.
Probably more when you think that the forge probably depletes a little of the oxygen. Ducts would have to be good to stop themselves being self defeating....

Maybe even an AC? Cool the outside air to really cold levels to density it even more, an average AC should be good for like 400cfm per ton...
You could be pushing well over 10 percent more air, which would probably be enough to counteract the pressure change

Size of the pipe and output pressure of the blower probably the limiting factors. Bigger blower not necessarily higher pressure
Quinn Blankenheim

Keep in mind that your NG fuel is about half as energy dense as LP, so you will need twice as much fuel per unit of air to get the same heat in the forge. You keep putting more air in, but are not increasing your fuel, and in fact probably decreasing it because you are putting more air in, so you will be limited in the amount of energy entering the fuel. Get a bigger transition tube like someone below said.
burntdabruski - 2 måneder siden
A good resource for improving your blower performance and explaining a lot of other comments is the Cook Fans "Cookbook." You can find free pdfs easily online. It has a lot of diagrams and a good troubleshooting section. One thing that I haven't seen commented yet is that you can improve the performance of a blower on the inlet side of the blower. 2.5 to 3 diameters of straight duct into the inlet of the blower reduces turbulence on the inlet. Can't say it will solve the problem but it will improve performance.

Idea for obtaining more air for the new forge. Use an “intercooler”. Many automotive applications use it to cool hot (and therefore less dense) air into cooler (more dense) air. See Supercharging and Turbocharging. The more dense the air, the more air molecules available to burn, more/better combustion. Of course flow is important as well and you must have piping that can support the amount of flow you are generating. Piping size and change of direction impact this greatly.
