Why wouldn't you just drive the door from the bottom on a track? Then the electronics can be near but not take as much heat.
Elijah Valenzuela

You know it would have been simpler if you did the mechanics on the bottom pushind the dors up on a rail instead of pulling it from the top. Thats wat i would have done and i think it would have been more easy my way.

Why not fit and fill doors with firebrick ? Might be lighter . Or two doors that butterfly to the sided so gap in center can be seen through . Maby a foot operated manual opener . "Deeds not words "

Genuinely don't understand why it's so complicated, a door what pull up on a chair would work instead of a handle you pull with your hands make it long and put a foot pedal on it

All you needed was an electric linear actuator and have the pedals one lets the current go one way, and the other lets it go the other. Anything with a screw will hold its position far better than a stepper by itself
And just have the electronics below pushing up.

why not use a counter wight, frame, linkage and a treadle! seems easier, reliable and cheaper.
remember scraps is your only true friend. it won't leave you skint or annoyed.

Just a thought (and I am late to the show I know), but a motor at the bottom to move the door might work.. keep it away from the temperature.

Should have used linear actuators and pushed the frame vertically. Offers mechanical override opportunities and removes elevated mechanical elements.

I know this is like really late, but, I built a door using angle iron, cut to dimension welded it together than cast 2000 degree castabke refractory ( wielded studs to angle iron this allows castabke to bind and hold). Then two steel wheels some more angle iron. Sliding barn door. Works better then I thought it would

Why not just set up something similar to a step activate bin lid? You could control it with your foot, and ignore the motor.

Foot pedal? Why not add a hand handle as well? Maybe put an ATM machine in the corner that's actuated by your PIN number.
BILLY . CADMAN - 5 måneder siden
Instead of a top mounted pull setup you should of done it on the side as heat rises and do it a little like how ruler coastes work but instead it stops at the top and the the motor runs in reverse to bring it back down at a controlled speed but good job haha just a bit of feedback

why make it on the top, tho?
it'd be more elegant, out of the way, and compact on the bottom
it would also be better heat-wise, as the hot air rises

Instead of a whole frame, wouldn’t a triangle be enough.
Coming from the base of the forge half way up the shaft. It would probably hold the weight and would save a lot of space and steel.

For a long time I thought you should have a 500 lb. tank outside. It may not be allowed by your lease or regulations. Also I worked on furnaces tempering steel wire that were stainless, up to about 1500 degrees. Stainless forge?

I personally would've gone with a gate that was lifted from below, putting the computer and mechanics well below the heat source to protect it. Could either us hydraulic lifts, even a wrench and racket.

Electric door not a good idea...... if the motor goes out when your work is in the fire and you can not open it.
B Frazer
B Frazer - 6 måneder siden
Stepper motor(s) (if you want to go that route) below the forge away from the majority of the heat, rack and pinion driving the doors vertically you could even gear it down to increase the torque if you wanted to get crazy. That would be my initial thought, but there are likely an infinite number of methods to raise and lower doors, humans have been accomplishing that task for quite some time. If a build works no need to complain! Thanks as always Alec.

*Easiest way to do the door(s)? Lots of room UNDER, use counterweights to help manage them!!*
Salimufari - 6 måneder siden
K I S S Alec. Keep It Simple... you know... what's wrong with a counter weight & pivot arm where the fulcrum is half way down the length of the forge and the weight is opposite the door. Like a one piece garage door. The pivot needs to be near the top then just add a disk break like from a bicycle with ceramic pads to hold it in place with a foot pedal to open the caliper. Free the break with the pedal, move door with w/e is in your hands at the time step off the pad to hold the door. As long as the door is a bit heavier than the weight it will auto close next time you hit the floor pedal.
CAPNMAC82 - 6 måneder siden
Instead of over the forge, you should have just put all the working bits under the forge. Door(s) on a U frame wit hthe lifting motors at the base and a counterweight between.

TangoDeltaDelta - 6 måneder siden
To make it so your lift system doesn't have to be as powerful, or hold so much to keep the doors at a certain height, I hope you considered using a counter-balance system of some sort.
