Hmmm, so hot oil finish seems to at least be similar to seasoning a cast iron skillet.

Alec - For heavens sake - that is NOT the way to abuse a Chuch. Take care of your tools. That is a Monarch Lathe - Remember - Rare, high quality, Special... There are better ways of doing that.

I can't spell this in englisch so..... Look at This old Tonys Channel. He has some good vids about broatching. ;)

Alec you got such a great respirator, why don't you use it when you work with oils that get vaporized. Oils condense back to oil inside your lungs, that's everything but healthy and very hard for your body to get rid of

Swear to God that with the amount of sanding Will has done, 'cause he always appears to be doing just that, he could take raw iron ore and using only one piece of 120 grit sand it into a damascus blade....

You know after working as a mechanical engineer (focusing on fitting and turning) I didn't realise how small your lath is. However it's still an amazing piece of machinery!

It loos like it is going pretty good, and the guard approach was successful, while not taking two weeks to complete by doing it in once piece. You have to consider that while they turned out hundreds of different versions of weapons, only certain ones didn't get melted down for scrap, and were saved for some reason. There might have been a lot of variations of these, that will never be known. On the pommel, after all the work done on it, you could go back and flatten two sides with filing, and do a little oval work on the bottom to get that lobed 13th century look. A small pin on either side between the pommel and the handle wood, and you can just screw it down tight. The method of broaching used will put a lot of wear on the guide ways and the track of the mill, because that energy is being transferred partly diagonally back down through it. There's got to be some bench broaching tool to specifically make hex wrench ports. Some other guys drill a hole through the top of the tightening pin and do it that way, by passing a small tool through to spin it down and tighten it. The blade looks really good.

3:20 - In culinary circles, that process is called "seasoning." Chefs do it particularly to cast iron pans. It puts a microscopic layer of carbon on the metal, which makes it practically non-stick and resistant to corrosion.

Why didn't you drill a hole through the side of the pommel nut so you could stick a rod through to tighten everything down; similar to how many vices are designed? Would've looked Lots better, and much more natural than a hex head at the end....

I thought the little nut that was going to tighten the pommel was called Alec.
Two other ways to make a nut would of been.
1. Use the lathe to turn the nut blank, then use the mill and a hexagonal collette block to create a hexagonal acorn detail that a wrench could be used on to tighten it onto the tang.
2. Turn a cylindrical nut with a threaded hope all the way through it on the lathe, then mill a slot in it. So the nut could be tightened on the tang with a flat bladed screwdriver. Then a small acorn detail could be screwed into the unused part of the nut thread to hide the slot.
Both ways would look more historically accurate than an alien head.

Why the hell don't you take some lessons for the lathe and mill ! I mean you are making a living out of this. The least you can do is to take this serious. You just can't ruin machines like this. It's painful to watch. That grinding on the lathe without covers or just hammering the tailstock like a madman . If you won't invest the time into learning then stick to your furnace and hammer . Peace out
