Most use stainless steel AEB-L for custom knife making here in the west. poor AEB-H not getting some credit but his japanese counterparts GIN 3 & VG 1 is widely used there.

This is why you need a coal forge along with your gas forge. That way you can get small area's hot and not worry about over heating the smaller ones.

I'll start out be admitting that I haven't been watching for a little while. However, I happened to notice neither Alec nor Will aren't using the giant fancy surface grinder anymore and I haven't even seen it in the shop. Anyone know what happened to it?

Alec, Always tack & check you are going to weld in the correct place.. I learned this the hard way & had to cut thru 6 inches of weld material on angle iron with a Hacksaw becuase the sawzall died after 20 seconds.. battery wasn't charged & the other battery would take another couple hours to be charged.. Yea no Not fun.. Measure twice, cut once (in this case weld once).

So in a shop like yours, it would seem to me that there would be A LOT of little pieces of random steel that come off the edges of products. Do you ever save all those random pieces and try a use them in Cannister Damascus?

Muriatic acid is commonly used to clean or remove excess mortar from stone work - hence readily available at places that sell masonry materials such as home stores.
Barring aesthetics, small cracks in SS could be TIG fill welded, since this is only a utility cutlery set and not show pieces.

Alec, This is exactly why i LOVE watching you! You show your mistakes and help everyone learn from you. Lots of other smiths on YT make a fancy production out of their videos, condensing a month of work into a 20 min video, with no mistakes and everything absolutely perfect... but you show what went wrong so other people can be better smiths from watching your stuff.

Hey Alec,
Aren't you will's superior and boss? Isn't he your employee? This is the third work accident in a short time. It is time that you take measures in your hand and improve the situation. Else you could get In trouble (at least in germany you would).
You should (on paper) explain all the rules and safety measures again and controll him how he is handling it. I know this sucks. But that is being a boss. Please make sure he stays alive and is stop hurting him.
And maybe you should get a proper treatment of the thumb. :D

Hey Alec, I’m an IE and I love the new warehouse. For some extra lean with reducing footsteps, might also get some ergonomic floor padding, improves visual flow and physical strain for little cost, something to think about. Keep up the awesome work with all these great projects.

I work in shipping/receiving and warehousing...
The last thing that would interest me is watching a few noobs doing it on YouTube, lol.
Crucial tip though; hire someone with experience doing it. Most of the issues I see in places I work stems from office or sales people thinking they know the best way to organize a warehouse

Fork: why not taper it, round the sides, then slide it on a table saw (with a steel cutting saw blade of course) and cut a slit right down the middle? LONG tines, no stress to the material, beautiful,
Why not??🤷‍♂️
OR: draw it out, long and thin, round it and taper the ends (looks like a long steel double ended throwing dart), HEAT, bend it to a u-turn and you have THE SAME THING🤦‍♂️. Just another path.
That was A LOT of stress on the alloy, Alec. That’s why it cracked and began looking like a hand that just got slammed in a car door.
