Nice build.
Those langets are seriously overkill thick. Extant examples are quite thin. Also more of a socket in the head bit itself. Historical examples weigh ~7-9 pounds total. Octagonal stave with a bit of taper from the middle of the shaft to the ends were common.

Medieval halberds were up to 12 feet long. 8 feet is a small one. The spike on the top is used to stop a charging horse (wooden end planted in the ground. And pikemen would fight each other so the longer reach usually won.

Don’t know if anyone else has said this yet, but I recommend using hardwood for a handle and having it be rectangular instead of square so you can “palm it” which helps with blade alignment when striking so you always get the best cut/strike as possible. For a good example, look at wood cutting axes/pick axes.

Always kinda funny to watch these very skilled smiths approach wood like its dead metal. Wood moves even after death because it is evil.
Unotch - 3 måneder siden
Great work but that pole fitting is way, WAY too massive. That's why it is so heavy.
The originals mostly only had two strips at the side and they were thin enough to be carved into- and flush with the pole.

A comedian, AND an artist! 😆🤜🤛 Super cool end result for the halberd. Can you also do a bill hook the likes of which billmen used back in medieval, and early Renaissance warfare?

Fun Fact:Halberds were made to stop Cavalry Charges. The butt was placed into the ground and the pointy end was held forward to impale horses stopping the charge. They were usually only used once....Sad.

I know this comes two months late but I'm fairly certain that those langets are traditionally set into chiseled recesses in the haft. This is at least true of the poleaxe.

with an halberd this big the pole should be twice longer it can feel far too big but aldberd of this size exist and your is huge far too huge for your actual pole

Why do you sometimes quench in water instead of oil? Isn't it kind of a blacksmithing sin to quench in water because it has a higher chance or cracking???

Speaking from the couch observer. This looks like a project that would have been much easier in a charcoal forge so you could heat a specific area and isolate the heat better

I've seen quite a few of your projects where you use a grinder or the milling machine to get a flat surface on your handles to start shaping them. Have you thought about getting an Electric wood planer? It would probably save you a lot of time and you can do the entire surface of the wood at time.

this thing is toooooo heavy... battle halberd weight around 2,5 kg (~ 5 pound's) and its made from 2 piece's like sandwich , some time 3 when u forge weld the spike .It's not like heavy axe for splitting wood, its realy fast light polearm weapon.

The halberd head is too thick. It should be much lighter than it looks, otherwise it isn't a very good weapon. Like european swords, it taper a lot, the blade and langette should not be thick.

Most non-Americans I've ever met know little to nothing about their own country, history or world events but they are "cultured" because they speak another language or lack personal hygiene. :D

is there a reason for why halberds were made with langets? wouldnt it have been so much less work to make them like spearheads with a rounded bottom that you could stick the handle into and rivet as opposed to having to manage the langets

For some reason polearms are very hard to make. There are very few good ones in market. One would think that sword would be the hardest to make.
