gearhead 130 have never "ruined" a valve seat and I've done it to reseat countless of valves only just done it last week on a transit puma head so your point about ruining the seat in seconds is invalid 😊
gearhead 130
gearhead 130 - Måned siden
@Alec Steele Alec, if you do this you will likely destroy it. Please consult the expert before using a power tool on it. I can tell you this, if you do that with an automotive valve it is ruined in SECONDS. It would take longer for that valve since there is no cam or stem height to worry about but still, just don't. Doing it by hand is the right way, especially for someone that's not a professional and does not yet have a feel for it. You did it correctly.

@Tom Hammersley NOOOOOOO! OMFG NOOOOO! You will most certainly RUIN the valve seat. Even by hand you can go too far quite easily and then you are screwed. You wouldn't believe how abrasive valve grinding compound can be. Good thing he had the fine grade.

Perhaps the bottom valve (the one that pushes the ram upward) is not sealing well, and is pushing up too hard at half throttle. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good luck

@alecsteele - Hope you're keeping the doggo away from all the dangerous hot, loud, smashy things! It's worth mentioning that any time humans should wear hearing protection or eye protection, our k9 pals should too. Obviously, a different room would be the safest place when you're at work, but if that's not possible, there are dog goggles and "Mutt-muffs". Wonder if they'd sponsor you?

Alec, (Not a metalworker, forgive my lack of jargon when naming parts) have you considered slop in the connecting steelworks that drive the treadle making the valves work slightly out of synch? by reducing slop in the connection points it might? allow better tolerance and therefore adjust the valve timing? The rust inside the cylinder does exactly the same thing the pitting you noticed on the valve does: it lets air leak.
In this case in the bottom part of the cylinder.
Unfortunately, this would mean having the inside of the cylinder reground, and new piston ring seals applied to the piston, which is not that easy I imagine...

Alec you might have to readjust the valve levers now that the exhaust valve is not leaking. Perhaps your original adjustments were trying to compensate for the leaking exhaust valve.

In part 4 I was screaming "lap that valve!" when I saw how pitted it was. Glad he found good info and lapped it in, even though it wasn't really done the right way it's a HELL of a lot better than it was. I wonder if he can completely stop the top hits if he tightens that tired old spring down a little more, or replace it. Might need to hone the cylinder for it to be completely right though.

Aside from the people who actually know what they’re talking about with grinding the valve in the proper seating position “sorry, not an engineer”. Maybe silicone/grease for the gasket? Maybe I’m wrong but the dry gasket might not seal very well when you’ve got all that psi? 🤷‍♂️

The method of checking valve seating that I've learned is using a bit of prussian blue and seat the valve to see the contact.
Well, he just did what I was typing. This is the same valve that is used in engines.

One of my favorite parts about this channel is the beautiful old machinery you have, especially the stuff from postwar America like your lathe and now, your hammer. I get that it has a spitfire smiley face on it and I get that you could paint it whatever fun bright or creative idea you have, but at least consider restoring the paint to something it would have had when it was originally made. I can't watch you hold up a bolt that was hand turned on a lathe by a man who is no longer alive working for a company that no longer exists, and then turn around and say back to you 'lol paint it so it looks like iron man GET IT'. Nobody makes hammers like this anymore, and they never will again. This thing was created in a brief time and place in industry. They are a finite resource, and when they all eventually fall in to disrepair, and they eventually will, the world will never see them again.

If it really needs to be painted... I´d say: CAT in yellow and black. But personally I think you should leave the nice patina on. It needed decades to look this way. But maybe do it rat rod style and just treat it nicely with a few layers clear coat?

Check the main seal on the ram. I will bet it is damaged or worn where it passes the port. This also explains why the ram drops so quickly when turned off. You are probably only getting about 60% of the full power it should have. P.S. This machine doesn't cycle fast enough to experience valve float.
