I think this is one of the most important interviews of yours that I've watched yet. Thank you very much for sharing the edited version for free so that bordering on broke students such as myself can also benefit from your content ;) I appreciate it!

Im not sure if everyone knows the term "essentialism" in social studies... just don't get the two mixed up. Could be an awkward conversation

Pick and choose to avoid overwhelming the mind but learn to be in stillness as it helps us to reboot. Take on what you can and timing is great tip. I took double the time and summers off to get college recent degree looking back no regrets because family and friends didn’t get neglected, paid as I went, and now we got this pandemic!
We can learn a lot by going to an estate sale, all the material goals aren’t much of’s the way you spent the time you had and relationships you maintain. Ultimately ,we need to know what we are investing our time into, that it’s something you don’t regret when sitting in that old timers rocking chair or deathbed.

This video an is a pure irony, two workaholics talk about happy living? I think the future of youtube is for psychologists to come out and tell how every so called successful person is undergoing therapy. Clearly the word 'less' has been abused relentlessly in this video. Essentialism is a word freely interpreted by the owner not a word that has a genuine meaning for all (what is essential for one person may be completely rubbish for another).

I think in my very slow pursuit to become a minimalist I’ve accidentally become an essentialist.

great video! this made me learn a lot about myself & i think i'm getting the book.
personal notes from the video:
- let conscience be the guide. success is a poor teacher. be discerning.
- we're busy bc other people are. hyperconnectivity.
- get enough sleep so you can discern properly
- if you don't prioritize your life, someone else will.
- accept that we are saying no all the time & everybody is. we say no in a compulsive way. say no within yourself.
- discipline pursuit of less but better
- buffering systems
- next level contributions
- 3x
- there are things that are far more important but less urgent to you. be cautious in pushing those away
- aligned: right thing, right time, right reasons, buffer & execute --> interest: if i pursue this, will i still have a buffer?
- buffer as key to consistency
- patience is active waiting: upper and lower bound of behavior -> bc goal is to do this consistently
- impatience drives consistency with the right mindset: "knowing what we know, how can we create buffers, upper and lower bounds?"
- know yourself & what you arent -> success -> make decisions from there based on conscience and not your success
- non-essentialism: it's over before it begins
- exchange value
- you can't say everything to everyone: what is your carefully curated message you're trying to share? don't get consumed by the noise. what are you trying to say + impt voice of clarity
- more effort ≠ more results
- justification for focus: if you believe that some things are more necessary than others, your behaviors will change with it too > not everything has equal value: it's about finding those things with proper value
- difficult to overstate the unimportance of everything
- trivial many vs vital few: figure those out & build systems to protect them

That was a bit long winded for a concept that stems out of economics 101: opportunity cost. You can be jack of all trades, but master of none.

Greg is currently changing my life! I started less with more in my life and think it's so important for us to understand what actually matters for us in our life everything else outside of that is all noise. My work has been more clear and my days really are intentional.

"Working hard is important"
I think if you replace hardwork with the ability to focus, then we can see how essentialism works. From what I'm seeing, prioritizing the vital few can increase that ability to focus

‘So busy’ for 20+ years resulted in such ill health I have been stopped in my tracks and no longer value ‘busy’ or the things ‘busy’ allowed me to possess. Thank you for this excellent post. Love the book. Love your work Matt. Keep it up. It’s a shame I had to get ill to reset my priorities but in a weird way I’m thankful for the experience. At least I learnt it in time to appreciate my new found life.

I also think the idea of using your stories on instagram/Snapchat and sharing all the positive details of your life its even more "oh i need to do that"
Like. Seeing that "oh hey amanda got boba tea for lunch I need that" "oh Rachel did her makeup this morning i should do that" it's gotten to where your not even comparing/judging yourself compared to peoples big life decisions, but to even the small miniscule things that are very unlikely to ever actually matter

Minimalism is more object based, essentialism is more for work. Essentialism seems to be like the specific term for minimalism in regards to work

10:56 ..i’ve recently learnt this the hard way, i’ve been fortunate enough to be handed a second chance in the form of two additional weeks - the kind of second chance that doesn’t ever really exist, bending the rules quite heavily
i won’t always get this luck
but now i must put in the grind, take a knee, dig deep, find my grit and push myself close to burnout to get this done ✌️ Matt, i cannot thank you, your guests and all your work enough 💛
